Research is showing that there may be certain healthy eating patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, that could have a positive impact on your mental processing including thinking, remembering, understanding, judging and problem solving. These results have been shown particularly in the elderly.
Although it is not clear exactly how food benefits the brain, researchers feel the answer might lie in the microbiota-gut-brain axis, that is, the communication pathway between the bacteria (or bugs) in your gut and the brain.
Eating foods such as fruit and vegetables, wholegrains and healthy fats can help improve the gut microbiota composition (or types of bugs in your gut) which can in turn affect how we think and feel.
